‘No news’ on Indian News Channels

This time, let me share one of my articles, penned by me almost one and a half year ago. It starts.......

The world is changing very fast. Experts say that the English language adds a new word every 98 minutes (5363 words annually). English has reached the milestone of 1 million (10,00,000) words in the second week of June 2009.  In such a fast paced environment, it carries paramount importance for Indian news channels to unfold information, news, happenings and updates. Most of them work on 24 X 7 X 365 basis theoretically. Barring few of them, others have failed miserably in bringing useful coverage.

For our topic of discussion, we will limit to Hindi news channels airing their programmes in India only.

Hindi News channels segment is composed of DD News, NDTV India, Zee News, Star News, IBN 7, Aaj Tak, Tez, India TV, India News, Sahara Samay, Live India, Voice of India, Total TV and few others. All of them are national news channels. Here, ‘national’ means targeted to Indian citizens. Several times the news is aired based on reporting convenience of the news channel rather than relevance to audience. Few examples are: Rainfall in Delhi or power cut in Mumbai suburbs or strike of particular people in Bengaluru. They are not national news. But, still such news carry prime slot on these channels.
